In the history of legendary Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick’s life there is still one missing piece of the puzzle: his eleven-year adventure across Latin America. Whilst on the hunt for those lost years, Joel Griffett quickly hit a brick wall. Landing in Chile, it soon became clear that Trevithick was absent from the historical record, but as it turned out, he wasn’t the only fascinating Cornishman to venture away from Cornwall during the 19^th century, nor were these stories of personal fortune the only ones to tell.
Thus began an entertaining detour through the mining hotspots of Chile and Bolivia and a crash course in history from the 16^th century to the present.  From hitchhiking through the unforgiving Atacama Desert, up to the high plains of the Altiplano and the accursed mines of Cerro Rico in Potosi, the home of Spanish silver, Joel finally made it all the way to the shores of Lake Titicaca where he was refused entry to Peru, owing to political chaos just across the border.
An enthralling but never overly serious dive into the dark world of mining, where myths, rumours and strange encounters were never far away on the most mystical of continents.
